Work is expected to start next spring on reconfiguring the layout of the road to smooth traffic flow.
The 2km stretch of road between the M6 and Tyburn Road is a major part of the highway network within northeast Birmingham. The council applied to the DfT for funding for improvements as traffic is subject to significant delays throughout the day.
The scheme comprises:
- improvements to M6 Junction 5 roundabout 鈥 traffic signals and carriageway widening
- provision of a new signalised junction at Chester Road and Berrandale Road
- improvements to Chester Road and Fort Parkway roundabout 鈥 traffic signals and carriageway widening
- widening of existing dual carriageway to 3 lanes between Chester Road / Fort Parkway and Chester Road / Kingsbury Road roundabouts
- improvements to Chester Road and Kingsbury Road and to Chester Road and Tyburn Road roundabouts
The project is scheduled to complete in spring 2015.
Councillor Tahir Ali, Birmingham City Council cabinet member for development, jobs and skills, said: 鈥淲ith 40,000 vehicles using the road each day, delays on Chester Road have been causing real issues for businesses; this discourages further investment to the area, so I鈥檓 really pleased the situation has been recognised. It will also mean improved facilities for pedestrians, cyclists and people using public transport.鈥
