European construction output slips

20 Oct 16 Construction output fell by 1.3% in August across the 28 countries of the European Union, according to latest figures from the EU statistical office, Eurostat.

Production in 19 countries of the Eurozone was down by 0.9% compared to July.

In July 2016, output had grown by 1.5% in the Euro area and by 0.3% in the EU28.

Comparison of August鈥檚 figures with the previous year show a fall of 0.5% in the EU28, though output rose by 0.9% in the Euro area.

In the EU28, the monthly decrease of 1.3% is due to civil engineering falling by 1.5% and building construction by 1.2%. Among member states with available data, the largest decreases in production in construction were recorded in Poland (-5.5%), Sweden (-5.4%) and Spain (-3.0%), and the highest increases in Slovakia (+6.7%), Hungary (+4.6%) and Italy (+3.4%)

In terms of the annual comparison, increases in production were recorded in the Netherlands (+13.6%), Sweden (+12.0%), Italy (+4.2%) and France (+2.0%), while the largest decreases were observed in Poland (-21.8%), Slovenia (-14.5%) and Bulgaria (-10.2%).
