Dunlop crane tyre can now go faster

26 Jul 12 Dunlop has increased the speed rating of its mobile crane tyre to meet customer demand for 80km/h travel speeds.

The Dunlop 445/95R25 SP ER50 tyre is specifically designed for road-going all-terrain cranes that often need to travel reasonably long distances on motorways.

The new version of the ER50 has a load index and speed factor of 174F (previously 177E) 鈥 this increases the permissible speed factor from 70km/h to 80km/h with a maximum load of 6700kg per tyre at the higher speed.

The tread has a continuous zigzag central zone, which improves the footprint, prevents vibration and allows for better ride comfort, Dunlop says.聽 Large grooves give good traction and the wide footprint allows uniform load distribution for even wear.聽 Very important for crane tyres is the reinforced construction and the stability due to the closed shoulder blocks.

The new ER50 tyres have been tested by Bexhill-based Coussens Crane Hire, whose owner Paul Coussens said: 鈥淭hese are the best tyres we have ever fitted on our cranes.鈥

He said: 鈥淭he tyres have now covered 13,250 kilometres and are showing excellent even wear.聽 Also there have been no signs of any heat build-up in the shoulder or bead areas, which is remarkable considering this particular machine regularly travels in excess of 130 miles (210km)聽 without stopping to let the tyres cool down鈥.

Goodyear Dunlop OTR marketing manager Stephan Renson said: 鈥淭he new version of the Dunlop SP ER50 is the direct result of us responding to our customers鈥 needs. Reliability and the ability to drive these cranes long distances at maximum speed are the crucial factors that operators require 鈥 this new tyre delivers both.鈥
