Domestic growth for Atkins

13 Jun 13 Engineering group Atkins has seen its UK operations grow in the past year although globally the business slid a little.

Revenue from Atkins鈥 UK operations was up 4.7% to 拢900.3m for the year to 31 March 2013, from 拢859.9m the year before.

UK operating profit was up 9.7% to 拢56.6m from 拢51.6m. Staff numbers at year end were 5% up at 9,374, up from 8,924 a year before, excluding the 1,200 who work in the highways business that has been sold to Skanska.

Globally, revenue was 0.3% down to 拢1,705.2m (2012: 拢1,711.1m)

Pre-tax profit was down 23.8% to 拢103.3m (2012: 拢135.5m), although underlying pre-tax profit was up 2.9% to 拢104.5m (2012: 拢101.6m).

Worldwide, the company employs approximately 17,900 people, up 2.7% on the previous year-end.

鈥淭he UK region had a good year and we have achieved positive momentum across all our UK businesses, resulting in headcount growth in continuing operations,鈥 the company said. 鈥淲orkload in our rail business has strengthened and utilisation is much improved, helped by recent wins in signalling and electrification.聽 Our water business is performing well through the Asset Management Plan (AMP) cycle, with recent success such as our appointment by Thames Water to its 12 year, capital delivery water framework contract.

We have an ongoing focus on driving operational efficiency through cost reductions and supplementing skills with niche acquisitions where appropriate. We will invest in developing our people, focusing on quality, technical excellence and innovation.
