The project, which has created a total of 27 homes across four different sites, is the first affordable housing project built directly for and owned by a local authority in Kent for two decades. Ashford is one of just a handful of authorities in the South East to begin building affordable housing again after the introduction of new rules which allow them more financial freedom.
The completion of this scheme continues the relationship between Denne and Ashford Borough Council, which has already resulted in the successful refurbishment of 325 homes to the Decent Homes standard.
Located on the former sites of unused garage blocks, the 23 houses and four flats, which were built to Code for Sustainable Homes Level 3 using a timber frame system, provide Ashford with much-needed affordable housing.
Cllr Aline Hicks, portfolio holder for housing at Ashford Borough Council, said:鈥 This is an important initiative, which not only provides affordable homes for local people to rent, but is also regenerating and revitalising key areas of council owned land.
鈥淭his innovative use of our land is helping to redevelop local communities, resolve anti-social behaviour problems, create employment opportunities and make a difference to the lives of local people.鈥
On Thursday 21st July, an official ceremony was held by Ashford Borough Council at Tilers Court to open the five one-bedroom bungalows. The Mayor of Ashford, Cllr Matthew French, was in attendance to cut the ribbon.
