The 拢6.4m contract will deliver rooms for 179 students at Cardiff University鈥檚 Talybont halls of residence complex. The new building will be called Talybont Gate.
Construction started on site last month and is scheduled to complete in summer 2014.
A total of 27 clusters containing six, seven, and ten bedrooms will be developed over the six storeys. Each cluster will have shared kitchen facilities, dining area and lounge.
The development will be constructed using a reinforced concrete frame with traditional brick outer walls, as well as a mixture of timber and zinc cladding. Architectural curtain walling systems will break up the outer elevations.
A BREEAM 鈥楨xcellent鈥 rating is being targeted, with a rainwater harvesting system and solar photovoltaic panels situated on the roof.聽 The rainwater harvesting will provide 鈥済rey鈥 water to the toilets on the 4th floor. The photovoltaic panels will provide power to the building while the students are in residence as well as feeding back into the utility grid at all other times.
