Every year Leeds Business School puts together rankings of ‘Britain’s Most Admired Companies’ for Management Today magazine.
In 2014 Kier was the top construction company. In 2015 it is Costain, just narrowly ahead of Kier.
The Top 5 for heavy construction companies, and there scores, is:
- Costain – 65.1
- Kier – 64.9
- Keller – 63.6
- Galliford Try – 63.5
- Laing O’Rourke – 62.7.
There is little indication of how the scores were achieved or what admiration means, in this context, although the rankings are based on feedback from company directors.
There was also a Top 5 ranking for house-building developers, which Berkeley topped for the 13th consecutive year.
Berkeley was a clear winner in this category and the only house-builder to rank higher than the fifth placed construction company. The house-builders’ Top 5 looks like this:
- Berkeley – 70.5
- Barratt – 62.4
- Bellway – 60.1
- Crest Nicholson – 57.4
- Persimmon – 57.1.
The overall list ranks 247 well-known companies and puts consumer goods giant Unilever in first place for 2015. In second place comes last year's winner Johnson Matthey. Property group Derwent London is third, Easyjet fourth and Berkeley fifth.
Costain is positioned at number 33 up from last year’s position of 52.
