Costain board selects new chairman

6 Apr 16 Former PowerGen chief executive Paul Golby is to be the next chairman of Costain.

Paul Golby takes over from David Allvey as Costain鈥檚 chairman at the end of the annual general meeting on 5th May 2016.聽 David Allvey will step down from the board at the same time.

Mr Golby is also chairman of NATS Holdings (formerly National Air Traffic Services) and a non-executive director of National Grid. Previous board roles include chairman of AEA Technology Group.聽

After a career that took him to Dunlop, BTR and Clayhithe, Paul Golby spent 13 years at PowerGen (latterly E.ON UK), including nine as chief executive, overseeing its transformation into one of the country鈥檚 leading energy suppliers. He retired from E.ON in December 2011.

Born in 1951, he graduated in mechanical engineering from Aston University where he was appointed pro-chancellor and chair of council in 2009.聽 He has been chairman of the Engineering & Physical Sciences Research Council since April 2012.聽

Mr Golby said that he was 鈥榟onoured鈥 to join Costain. 鈥淚t is a great British engineering success story with a strong heritage, outstanding brand and strong market positions,鈥 he said. 鈥淚 look forward to playing a part in delivering further success as the group accelerates its growth agenda鈥.

Meanwhile National Grid said that it would be taking care to ensure there would be no conflict of interest. It said that 鈥渁rrangements will be put in place to ensure the situational conflict is appropriately managed and kept under continuous review. Mr Golby will not be involved in any board decisions relating to Costain.鈥
