Skanska, for example, has put forward three of its major projects: Barts & the Royal London hospital, Crossrail Paddington station and South Essex college.
The Open Doors Weekend is being held on 27 and 28 September. Visitors will get the opportunity to have a site tour, speak with construction workers and learn more about career opportunities in the industry.
Other sites opening up for visitors include Skanska鈥檚 M25 managed motorway scheme, which is a joint venture with Balfour Beatty.聽 This is one of seven sites that Balfour Beatty is opening up for the weekend.
Carillion, BAM, Willmott Dixon and Vinci are among the 17 major contractors that are opening up sites across the country.
Places on each site are limited so anyone interested in attending is encouraged to book early.
Open Doors is an industry initiative organised by the UK Contractors Group (UKCG), CITB-ConstructionSkills, the Considerate Constructors Scheme and the Chartered Institute of Building (CIOB).
Skanska executive vice-president Bill Hocking said: 鈥淲e are delighted to be supporting Open Doors Weekend again this year. It鈥檚 a unique chance for people to find out more about what it鈥檚 really like to be on a construction site and the degree of skill and complexity which goes into bringing buildings and infrastructure projects to life.
鈥淚t鈥檚 a fantastically exciting industry which has scope for a wide range of careers, whether it鈥檚 on site or behind the scenes. Those working in construction get the opportunity to shape our communities for generations to come.鈥
UKCG director Stephen Ratcliffe said: 鈥淐onstruction is undergoing rapid change and needs to develop a skilled, diverse workforce to meet these challenges and maintain its position as one of this country鈥檚 most dynamic, creative and important industries.
鈥淣owadays construction is more about careers than jobs and the expected increase in demand for management roles in the next few years means that we need quality talent entering the industry now to fill these future positions.鈥
