The 14-storey building at One Angel Square scored 95.16% from the Building Research Establishment Environmental Assessment Method (BREEAM) 鈥 the highest marks ever recorded.
Built by BAM Construction, the building鈥檚 many environmentally friendly features include: power generated from crops grown on Co-op farms; heating and cooling using air drawn from below the basement and redistributing it at the earth鈥檚 core temperature; and a double skin fa莽ade that acts as a 鈥榙uvet鈥 to insulate the offices in the winter and ventilate it in the summer.
One Angel Square is phase one the NOMA scheme to redevelop 20 acres of the northern part of Manchester city centre.
BAM Construction director Ian Fleming said: 鈥淭he commitment of The Co-operative to build a truly sustainable building set us a challenge unprecedented in commercial buildings.聽 To have achieved the goal with this BREEAM accolade is a testament to the genuinely collaborative approach between The Co-operative, BAM Construction, the designers 3D Reid, Buro Happold and all our partners.聽 This synergy, combined with new technology and traditional construction skills, has created a world class building and a legacy for which the people of Manchester can be proud.鈥
