CITB-ConstructionSkills welcomes a new member to the board

11 Jan 12 CITB-ConstructionSkills’ Chief Executive Mark Farrar has today (10 January 2012) welcomed the announcement that John Lorimer is to join the board.

A civil engineer by background, John heads up Manchester City Council鈥檚 (MCC) 拢300m-a-year Capital Programme Division, which is currently delivering a range of transformational projects including the 拢500m Better Schools Foundation programme.聽聽

John鈥檚 appointment as a non-executive trustee to the Industry Training Board聽 is due to his extensive procurement experience with major construction contractors and his experience of instigating skills and training programmes such as MCC鈥檚 鈥榊oung People into Construction鈥 initiative, which now employs over 100 apprentices and trainees.

Commenting on the appointment, Mark Farrar said: 鈥淥n behalf of CITB-ConstructionSkills, I am delighted to announce John鈥檚 appointment as a new member of the board. John brings with him a wealth of expertise, particularly around procurement and governance from both the private and public sectors. His experience will strengthen our work around public sector procurement that we are taking forward with the Client Based Approach project to bring new blood into the industry.

聽鈥淭hrough this new initiative, we are working closely with local councils to look for possible employment and training opportunities for all major developments based on each projects size and value. It is a means of supporting both national and local government to increase the numbers of apprenticeships and leave a lasting skills-legacy for local communities.

鈥淚鈥檓 sure John will also greatly enhance the Board鈥檚 thinking on such issues as the impact of Building Information Modelling (BIM) and the importance of maintaining investment in skills and training.鈥

John鈥檚 first board meeting will be on 22 February 2012.
