Cemex develops special mixes for Polish heritage setting

27 May 16 Cemex has developed special mixes including a blend of crushed brick and concrete for the construction of a new cultural centre within the medieval town of Torun in Poland.

The Jordanki Cultural & Congress Center is located within Torun鈥檚 UNESCO World Heritage Site and had to fit in with the gothic architecture.

Cemex supplied more than 30,000m3 of concrete for the project, designed by the Spanish architect Fernando Menis.

A mix of crushed brick and concrete - known as 鈥楶ikado鈥 - was used to fill the 10cm spaces between the building鈥檚 bricks, creating an unusual visual effect. Working to the architect鈥檚 model, Cemex鈥檚 laboratory also developed a special architectural concrete containing aggregates that matched the specific texture and color required by Menis for the fa莽ade, walls, polished floors, and footpaths of the building.

The Jordanki Center is the new home of Torun Symphony Orchestra and has a rehearsal room for which Cemex developed a concrete solution with special diffusers for the spread of sound. Cemex delivered a single-piece casting solution for聽 the walls 鈥 10m high, from 5m to 6m wide, and 100mm to 200mm thick.

鈥淭he Jordanki Cultural and Congress Center is a prestigious project for us. We were the only ones to successfully pass the tests performed before the project鈥檚 implementation,鈥 said S艂awomir Dobrowolski, director of the mobile concrete plant division of Cemex in Poland. 鈥淒uring deliveries, we developed a lot of concrete mix applications that were both interesting and demanding. The most spectacular one was 鈥楶ikado鈥, which was a challenging but positive lesson for us. Collaboration with our customers is our priority. As exemplified by this project, we analyse the best possible solutions with our customer in the areas of technology or logistics that benefit both parties, so they produce additional projects for us to work on together in the future.鈥

Cemex鈥檚 cement and ready mix technology centres are part of an R&D collaboration network, headed by Cemex Research Group, based in Switzerland.
