Work includes the partial demolition, reconstruction and refurbishment of selected areas of the existing Glasgow Royal Concert Hall.
The extension will be built onto the eastern end of the existing building.
The Glasgow Royal Concert Hall opened in 1990, the year that the city was made European City of Culture.
The new 600-seat auditorium to be built by Carillion will be home to the Royal Scottish National Orchestra.
