In a year that saw recovery start to kick in for its competitors, Carillion鈥檚 group revenue for the year was down 7% to 拢4.1bn (2012: 拢4.4bn).
Pre-tax profit was down 33% to 拢110.6m (2012: 拢164.8m) and even before exceptional costs the underlying operating profit was down 6% to 拢214.3m (2012: 拢227.9m).
The company said that the results were in line with expectation, because of the resdcaling of its UK construction operations.
Carillion chairman Philip Rogerson said: "In 2013, Carillion has continued to respond decisively to challenging market conditions, including completing the rescaling of its UK construction activities and the restructuring of its energy services business, which are now aligned in size to their respective markets, while continuing to develop and strengthen its positions in new and existing markets that offer good opportunities for growth.聽
鈥淥verall, we expect market conditions to remain challenging in 2014, but with a strong order book, good revenue visibility and substantial pipeline of contract opportunities the group is now well positioned for the future."
Including probable orders, the order book stands at 拢18.0bn on the back of some long-term support services contracts.
These now include an additional 拢370m of work over the next five years also announced today, with Carillion having been selected as the preferred bidder for support services contracts by telecoms company Arqiva and the Royal Bank of Scotland (RBS) in the UK, and by Canada Natural Resources Ltd (CNRL) in Canada.
Carillion will look after the operation, maintenance and repair of RBS鈥檚 1.5 million square metre estate in Great Britain.聽 Under this five-year contract, Carillion will provide these services for the Bank's branches, offices and cash and coin centres in England, Scotland and Wales.
The contract for Arqiva, the communications infrastructure and media services company, involves the provision of hard and soft facilities management for its corporate estate as well as specialist maintenance works for Arqiva's network of broadcast structures and masts.
In Canada, Bouchier Carillion has been selected by CNRL to provide integrated support services for CNRL's Horizon mine project in Fort MacKay, Alberta, that will include building maintenance and renovation, camp maintenance and fire water maintenance.聽聽聽
