Construction is now expected to start later this year.

The 拢26m school campus has been the subject of a fierce planning battle for three years. The site at Belle Vue used to be a waste tip and concerns have been expressed about the safety of the site for a school building. Just last month a village green application to stop the scheme was rejected.

Councillors had already given the development outline planning permission in 2010 and members of Durham County Council鈥檚 planning committee have this week approved the detailed proposals.

Councillor Claire Vasey, cabinet member for children and young people鈥檚 services, said: 鈥淭here have been some objections to these proposals and I can reassure all those who raised concerns that they have been debated and discussed at great length. The county council has examined the feedback and all issues raised have been thoroughly considered in reaching this decision.

鈥淚 would like to urge everyone in the community to show their support for the new academy in the best interests of the pupils, parents and staff.鈥

Work to improve the local rugby club facilities, which will remain on the Belle Vue site, is also planned as part of the development. Work on the new Consett AFC ground is due to start later this month and a ground breaking ceremony will take place next Thursday, 14 March 14.
