Calgary LRT secures $1.53bn funding commitment

6 Jul 17 The government of the Canadian province of Alberta has agreed to contribute a third of the CA$4.65bn (£2.84bn) needed to build the first stage of the planned Calgary Green Line light rail transit (LRT) system.

The province has announced that it will provide up to CA$1.53bn over eight years to support project, using funds from the Climate Leadership Plan.

The Calgary Green Line is expected to serve more than 60,000 people a day by connecting communities from 16th Avenue North through the downtown core to Shepard in the southeast.

In the 10 years leading up to opening day, Stage 1 of Green Line construction is estimated to create more than 12,000 direct聽 jobs and over 8,000 supporting jobs, such as engineering, planning and administration. The project will also support new, transit-oriented developments such as Quarry Park in the south.

Jeff Binks, president, LRT on the Green Foundation added: 鈥淎ll three orders of government should be commended on how they鈥檝e worked together to turn this project into a reality.鈥
