Breathing Buildings plays pivotal role in first ever BREEAM Outstanding Healthcare Certificate

3 Nov 11 Natural ventilation specialists Breathing Buildings are part of the impressive line up of green technology that enabled Houghton-Le-Spring Health Centre to become the UK’s first ever BREEAM Outstanding Healthcare building certified at the final stage.

This comes on top of the building achieving a BREEAM 鈥極utstanding鈥 at the design stage for best practice in sustainable design and environmental performance for buildings.

The new primary care development (by Willmott Dixon, in partnership with NHS South of Tyne & Wear)achieved a BREEAM 鈥極utstanding鈥 at the design stage for best practice in sustainable design and environmental performance for buildings and has achieved an impressive 85.31% in the buildings Post Construction Assessment.

Breathing Buildings played a crucial part in the project via the low-carbon natural ventilation system it was asked to develop for the project.

BREEAM (Building Research Establishment Environmental Assessment Method) is the leading and most widely used environmental assessment method for buildings. It addresses wide-ranging environmental and sustainability issues giving the ability to demonstrate the environmental credentials of buildings.

Andy Mackintosh, director at Willmott Dixon, said: 鈥淲illmott Dixon is delighted how the whole team has worked together to achieve BREEAM Outstanding. This is the first healthcare project in the UK to achieve BREEAM Outstanding.鈥
