Blacklisting scandal like ‘bad spy film script’

10 Sep 12 The culture of blacklisting by bosses of employees standing up for their rights reads like ‘a low budget spy film script’, Unite’s assistant general secretary Gail Cartmail told the TUC Congress in Brighton at the weekend.

Seconding the motion on illegal corporate bullying on Sunday 9 September, Gail Cartmail said: 鈥淯nite supports the call for a day of action to expose the hideous abuses by rogue bosses.聽 It is a disgrace that needs to be eradicated.鈥

Ms Cartmail showed delegates a packet of unredacted files that had come into the union鈥檚 possession from the blacklisting organisation, The Consultancy Association, now held by the Information Commissioner鈥檚 Office (ICO), following the 2009 鈥榖ust鈥.

She said: 鈥淭hese are just a handful of files, but each name is a person 鈥 a family 鈥 a life ruined.

鈥淭he contents read like a low budget spy film script, using codes and cross references. We had to write to the members named to tell them they are blacklisted 鈥 this cannot be right. We want full disclosure.鈥

Last week, Unite gave evidence to the Scottish Affairs Committee Inquiry into Blacklisting in Employment and asked for the committee to investigate the case of one of the stewards working at Grangemouth for Balfour Beatty Engineering Services. He was selected for redundancy by the man described by Unite as 鈥榯he spy in chief鈥 for the company.

Gail Cartmail said: 鈥淭his case is just the tip of an iceberg.鈥
