The glass and stone building has an elliptical shape with a sloped oval roof to achieve the overall shape of a rugby ball.
The 11,200 sq ft, four-storey office building is being built on the same site in Penistone where the firm was founded in 1863, overlooking the River Don. With the site being steep, there is an array of engineering obstacles, the contractor said, with two of the building鈥檚 levels being partially set below ground and next to a public highway.
JF Finnegan has so far cleared the site and is now building the foundations of the underground car park. The Sheffield-based contractor is on programme for a completion date of September 2013.
Dawa Singh, head of pre-construction design and build manager at JF Finnegan, said: 鈥淭his is an exciting, challenging project and one which will result in a spectacular, modern office building.鈥
Leeds based HTC Architects designed the scheme; Howell Goodfellow Consultants are advising.
