BAM FM, part of BAM Construct UK, has been awarded a gold medal from the Royal Society for the Prevention of Accidents (RoSPA) in its Occupational Health and Safety Awards 2012.
The gold medal for preventing accidents and ill health is achieved only after reaching gold status for five successive years and reflects sustained achievement and is placed above the merit, bronze, silver and gold levels.
BAM鈥檚 portfolio covers around 30 schools reflecting its prominent long-term position in the sector but it also includes police headquarters, many offices, leisure centres and community hospitals - and recently, even facilities at the Olympic Village. Mainly its contracts are long-term but it also manages facilities over shorter terms to help clients acclimatise to their new buildings. BAM鈥檚 success is most notable in Bristol, Birmingham, Scotland, Sussex, and London where it runs several schools. In total BAM FM is behind the facilities management of more than 70 diverse buildings in every sector.
David Rawlins, awards manager at the Royal Society for the Prevention of Accidents (RoSPA), a safety charity with a 95-year history, said: 鈥淭he RoSPA Awards programme provides well-deserved recognition for the winners and spurs on other organisations to raise their standards of accident and ill health prevention. We congratulate BAM FM on its success and encourage it, and all our other winners, to remain committed to safety and health, an approach that is well recognised to be good for workers and the bottom line.鈥
Kath Fontana, Managing Director, said: 鈥淢anaging facilities successfully is about the collective commitment of our people. So we are delighted to have our work recognised by RoSPA.聽 Central to how buildings perform is that they must be safe for their users and enhance their wellbeing. Because we design, develop, build, manage and maintain facilities here at BAM, we have an integrated understanding of the health and safety of buildings right through their life cycle. Managing buildings safely is core to our mission to create an enjoyable experience for our customers in a way that is trustworthy, reliable and considerate.鈥
BAM FM employs around 800 people in disciplines such as catering, cleaning and ground maintenance and provides both hard and soft FM services.
RoSPA鈥檚 awards date back to 1956, are arranged into both competitive and non-competitive categories across more than 20 sectors, and are the largest and longest-running awards programme of this kind in the UK. They are open to businesses and organisations of all types and sizes in the UK and overseas. RoSPA looks at accident records, overarching health and safety management systems, and practices such as strong leadership and workforce involvement.
