BAM Nuttall replaces Colas on Wirral highways

30 Jan 14 Wirral Council has selected BAM Nuttall to look after its highways for the next four years.

BAM Nuttall will replace Colas, whose 拢33m term contract expires in March.

The new contract, which runs to 2018, is one of the first in the country to be procured using the new national Highways Maintenance Efficiency Programme (HMEP) contract, specifically intended for local authority roads, rather than trunk roads and motorways.

Cllr Harry Smith, Wirral Council cabinet member for highways and transportation, said: 鈥淭he council is undergoing wholesale transformation in the way it carries out its responsibilities and BAM Nuttall will work with us on our on our main roads and local streets to make those changes a success.鈥

He added: 鈥淥ur new contractor will work closely with highways officers and the current contractor to ensure a smooth handover of operations and programmes of work from 1st April this year.鈥

BAM Nuttall was Cheshire County Council鈥檚 highways contractor between 2004 and 2012. It has a highways base at Winsford and offices in Northwich.

The firm has history in the area. Edmund Nuttall built the Liver Building in 1908 and carried out most of the construction work for the Queensway Mersey Tunnel from 1925 to 1932 and on the Kingsway Mersey Tunnel from 1967 to 1972.
