The contract calls for the financing, design, widening of 19 km to 3-lane dual carriageway and refurbishment of a 46.5 km section of the A9 motorway linking Berlin and Munich, followed by its operation and maintenance for 20 years. The section is located between the Lederhose interchange in Thuringia and the Bavarian border.

It is the first project under Germany’s ‘A-Modell’ programme, where the the payment mechanism is availability-based rather than toll-based.
The A9 connects Berlin with Northern Bavaria and Munich and is a major north - south connector, providing a gateway to Austria and Italy.
The Via Gateway Thüringen consortium will start its three-year construction period will start on 1 October and work will be led by Eurovia and Royal BAM Group subsidiary Wayss & Freytag Ingenieurbau.
The total investment will be €220m. Project financing includes €120 million in bank debt, which will be provided by a consortium of banks, an €88m subsidy from the federal government and equity contributed by the shareholders, amounting to approximately €12m.
