Balfour Beatty JV set to land £213m US metro deal

13 Nov 13 A £213m metro contract in the US state of Colorado is set to be awarded to a Balfour Beatty-led joint venture.

Denver鈥檚 Regional Transportation District (RTD) has recommended that the North Metro Rail Line design-build project be awarded to the joint venture team of GBBH, led by managing partner Balfour Beatty Rail. Other members of the team include Graham Contracting and Hamon Contractors. Balfour Beatty subsidiary Parsons Brinckerhoff is also a member of the team, serving as a subconsultant to lead designer, Stantec Consulting Services. Balfour Beatty Group holds a 50% share of the joint venture.

Balfour Beatty's professional services, construction and rail teams will collaborate to provide design and construction services across the 13.5 mile transit project. When complete, the project will extend the commuter rail line from Denver Union Station to the 124th Avenue Station, with options for additional extensions in the future.

鈥淩ail projects are a key area of strategic focus for us and I am very pleased that we are announcing another key contract with the RTD of Denver. It follows on from our existing work on the Eagle P3 project and the successful FasTracks programme, our involvement in the West Rail Line and On-call Services contracts as well,鈥 said Andrew McNaughton, CEO for Balfour Beatty. 鈥淐ontracts such as this bring all of our skills into the mix to benefit our clients. Our teams in Balfour Beatty and Parsons Brinckerhoff will be collaborating to better meet the transportation needs of the larger metro-Denver community.鈥

The next step in the process is RTD鈥檚 board of director approval for the recommendation, anticipated on November 26, 2013. Design and construction of the rail line is then scheduled to begin in early 2014 with a four-year project duration.
