Australia’s largest motorway project moves forward

4 Nov 13 New South Wales has set up the WestConnex Delivery Authority (WDA) to manage a AU$11bn (£6.5bn) motorway scheme planned for Sydney.

WDA will oversee the construction, financing and management of what will be Australia鈥檚 largest infrastructure project.

"WestConnex鈥檚 Board offers market leading construction, finance and engineering capabilities that reflect the innovative way the motorway is being built and financed,鈥 聽聽said NSW roads and ports minister Duncan Gay.

WDA鈥檚 Chairman, Tony Shepherd, heads a board with extensive infrastructure and public-private partnership experience, including Peter Brecht, Rod Pearse, Robert Hamilton, Peter Regan, Peter Duncan and David Stewart.聽

Shepherd is chairman of the Business Council of Australia and a former Director of Transfield. 鈥淭ony Shepherd is one of Australia鈥檚 outstanding business figures with a long track record of achievement within the infrastructure industry, including the Sydney Harbour Tunnel and Melbourne City Link,鈥 said Gay.

The NSW and Australian governments are providing AU$3.3bn for theAU$11bn to AU$11.5bn project, with the remainder to be financed by tolls.

鈥淲estConnex will revolutionise the way Sydneysiders travel about our great city, cutting 40 minutes off a typical journey from Parramatta to the airport, and bypassing up to 52 sets of traffic lights,鈥 said Gay.

He added that 10,000 jobs will be created during the construction phase, including hundreds of apprenticeships for young people.
