Australia tenders pilot for $400m rural rail programme

5 Apr 16 A pilot project has been launched for a scheme to improve rural rail services in New South Wales, Australia.

Expressions of interest are being invited for a AU$15m (拢8m) pilot to kick-start the AU$400m (拢214m) 鈥楩ixing Country Rail鈥 programme, which is targeted at improving freight movements across the state.

The Fixing Country Rail initiative will deliver a highly functional transport network across the state for moving freight in and out of regional areas, and will ease pressure on our local roads, said minister for roads and freight Duncan Gay. 鈥淭he programme complements Fixing Country Roads, which is all about improving freight movements between farms, key freight hubs like grain silos, saleyards, rail heads, supermarket distribution centres and depots,鈥 he said.

鈥淭he pilot will determine how to best approach the full $400 million Fixing Country Rail initiative which will deliver rail upgrades such as rail sidings, passing loops, opening unused rail lines and track upgrades to enable increased axle weights,鈥 he added.
