Australia seeks Asian input for $73bn rail programme

5 Jul 16 An Australian minister has embarked on a trade mission to Singapore, Hong Kong, Shanghai and Tokyo to showcase opportunities in the AU$73bn (£41.2bn) infrastructure programme under way in New South Wales (NSW).

NSW minister for transport and infrastructure Andrew Constance said there was keen international interest in Sydney Metro and that he would be meeting with some of the world鈥檚 leading rail operators to investigate the latest rail technology.

He will meet with government officials and leading rail operators to discuss the latest track and signalling technology, ticketing, passenger management, hig- speed rail, transport and land use planning and infrastructure project financing.

鈥淣SW is the infrastructure capital of the world and there鈥檚 huge overseas interest to be part of our $73 billion program,鈥 he said. 鈥淚 want to make sure NSW has world class infrastructure and that is why I am travelling to Asia to learn from the best in the world.鈥

Constance added that the infrastructure round tables he hosts will be an opportunity to showcase the ambitious infrastructure pipeline. 鈥淲e鈥檙e the leading economy in Australia and there鈥檚 huge interest from overseas to invest.鈥

He will also visit some of the leading rail operators in the world including metro operators SBS Transit in Singapore, 聽MTR in Hong Kong and Tokyo Metro, as well as bullet train operator JR Central in Japan. 鈥淲ith Sydney expected to grow by a million people in the next ten years, we鈥檙e not only building capacity but need to continually improve the customer experience.鈥

Constance will also be inspecting the new Changi Airport site in Singapore. 鈥淲e are in an exciting time with plans for the Western Sydney Airport moving ahead. As infrastructure minister i want the new airport to be at the forefront of technology and design.鈥
