Atkins lands design of Hong Kong’s third runway

17 Jun 16 Atkins has won the contract for the design of the planned third runway at Hong Kong International Airport.

The airport鈥檚 three-runway system (3RS) will allow it to handle 102 million passengers, 8.9 million tonnes of cargo and 607,000 aircraft movements per year by 2030.

Atkins鈥 scope of services includes the detailed design of a new third runway and associated taxiways, taxi lanes and aircraft parking aprons complete with associated airfield and apron systems, utility services and modification of the existing north runway. This contract also includes the associated construction stage design services.

Chief executive Uwe Krueger said: 鈥淭his significant contract win further strengthens our 20-year relationship with the Airport Authority Hong Kong and will allow us to assist our client in further developing the world class passenger facilities at the airport. We鈥檙e committed to continuing to support HKIA in improving its competitiveness for the benefit of passengers and the region鈥檚 economic development.鈥

Several other contracts to facilitate HKIA鈥檚 mid- and long-term expansion are being undertaken by Atkins including the detailed design for the second phase of the Midfield Development and the detailed design of 650 hectares of reclaimed land in preparation for the construction of the 3RS.
