Arup loses out on Panama design

17 May 11 A Chinese/US team is likely to be appointed to design a new bridge over the Panama Canal after it put in a bid substantially cheaper than the other five tenderers, including Arup.

The Panama Canal Authority (ACP) received six proposals from around the world for the design of the first-ever bridge on the Atlantic side of the waterway. ACP is currently evaluating the lowest cost proposal, jointly submitted by the China Communications Construction Company and the Louis Berger Group. A contract will be awarded if it is determined that the proposal meets all project needs.

The six bids for the design of the bridge and approaches were from:

  • TYPSA Principia (US$4,995,150)
  • URS Holdings 听听 听 (US$6,150,021)
  • Puente de Col贸n JV 听听 听 (US$7,212,000)
  • ARUP 听听 听 (US$8,542,017)
  • China Communications Construction Company / Louis Berger Group 听听 听 (US$4,662,352)
  • Ty Lin International 听听 听 (US$9,669,231)

Currently, the Bridge of the Americas and the Centennial Bridge - both on the Pacific side - provide the only routes for vehicles to cross the Canal. This new bridge will be the third across the Canal and the first located near the Gat煤n Locks, spanning the west and east sides of the city of Colon.
