Amsterdam begins work on three new city districts

9 May 17 The municipality of Amsterdam has appointed Sweco to provide advice and civil engineering services for three extensive urban development projects.

City districts IJburg-2, Zeeburgereiland and Overamstel are among key initiatives in the city鈥檚 plans to secure the supply of new homes.

The municipality of Amsterdam has estimated the value of Sweco鈥檚 contract at 鈧1m per year. The agreement runs through to April 2021 with four further one-year options.

Amsterdam is growing rapidly and the city has initiated a program to create to 50,000 new homes by 2025. Sweco will provide advice and services in the areas of design, engineering, procurement assistance and contract management throughout the development of the three districts.

鈥淲e wish to make optimum use of Sweco鈥檚 expertise in order to tackle this huge challenge in the most innovative and performance-based manner possible鈥, Tjeerd Roozendaal, director of the engineering division of the Municipality of Amsterdam.

The three areas have different characteristics. IJburg 2 is a development area on reclaimed land, Overamstel is a former inner city commercial site, and Zeeburgereiland has an industrial heritage.
