Three contractors left in chase for £2bn Essex waste PFI

16 Jul 10 Three contractors have been shortlisted for a £2bn PFI waste treatment contract by the Essex Waste Partnership.

Three contractors have been shortlisted for a 拢2bn PFI waste treatment contract by the Essex Waste Partnership, which comprises the county council and Southend-on-Sea borough council.

The three bidders are:

  • Resources From Waste, a consortium between United Utilities, John Laing Investments, and Laing O'Rourke;
  • SkanskaCory, a聽team made up of聽Cory Environmental and construction firm Skanska; and
  • A joint venture between Spanish waste company Urbaser and Balfour Beatty.

Four bidders have not progressed from an earlier shortlist announced by Essex Waste Partnership: Biffa; Shanks / Catalyst Lend Lease; Veolia ES Aurora; and VT Group.

The successful bidder will have to treat up to 377,000 tonnes of municipal residual waste per annum over a 25-year period.

The project, which secured 拢100.9m in PFI credits from DEFRA for the construction phase, is expected to involve mechanical biological treatment on a site at Courtauld Road, in Basildon, Essex.

The three remaining bidders will now develop detailed propoals for further discussion with the councils.

The preferred bidder is likely to be announced before the end of 2011.
