Morgan Est has been fined 拢6,000 after an accident which saw an employee lose his arm at a sewage works.

The Morgan Sindall civil engineering subsidiary pleaded guilty to breaching health and safety regulations after the incident at a Huddersfield Waste Water treatment works in March 2008.

The contractor was fined 拢6,000 and ordered to pay costs of 拢2,163 at Huddersfield Magistrates Court.

The court heard that on 12 March, an engineer employed by Morgan Est lost his right arm after coming into contact with a rotating screw conveyor on a newly installed piece of equipment at Neiley Waste Water Treatment, in Holmfirth.

Morgan Est was main contractor contractor for client Yorkshire Water on the refurbishment of the water treatment works.

A new sludge treatment plant had been installed and was in the process of being commissioned when the accident happened.

An investigation by the Health and Safety Executive found that a fixed guard on a screw conveyor had been removed to allow clearance of a blockage of sludge.

Morgan Est accepted that it had failed to carry out a suitable and sufficient risk assessment for the clearing of blockages in the sludge plant during commissioning works.
